Like my made-up word? ;]
I've always loved NY but have identified as a California/SF gal. That is starting to change rapidly, and I think I want to be in NY, but am scared off by rents and winter. With $ not an object (which it is) I'd like to have residences in both places and truly be bicoastal.
So I'm curious to hear from people who have done this or who do this: Is it all it's cracked up to be in my mind? What are the practical considerations of things like paying taxes--do you have to pay in two states?--and having pets? Do you or have you successfully done a swap? Or had a nightmare swap?
Have any of you struggled with the SF vs. NY choice, and what have you decided?
I would love to hear people's stories and insights on this.

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Wed, September 8, 2004 - 9:40 PMOne way to do it that I've seen is to have a place back east that you can rent during the summer for big bucks, then you go back to open it up or close it in may or September. The other way is to stay single and mobile and instead of paying for one big place at say $1200/mo, have two shared rooms on each coast at $600/mo. And of course the real simple...yeah...way is to make a lot of money without dying inside, and just invest in two places. -
-
Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Mon, September 13, 2004 - 1:13 PMThanks...but *where* in Manhattan or Brooklyn can I actually get something for $600? (You mean shared flat, not shared room I take it.) Actually where can I get "one big place at say $1200/mo"--in SF or NY? I don't think these exist anymore.
Also are you saying people will pay more to rent in NY for the summer? I was thinking I could summer there for cheap b/c everyone else hates the heat.
Anyone else? Anyone actually doing this? Tax tips, pet tips, tips on bicoastal living in general?

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 3:22 PMI wouldn´t say I´m fully bicoastal, for the time being I´m California-based with a flexible job and cheap rent (I pay under $450-month... live in the East BAy). so, I can afford to go out East once every couple months.
I just got back from 10 excellent days in NY, and I was there for about a month in May/June. will be back east in October, but after that I don´t show my face until the spring. The winter really is a big deal for me. It´s also a good time for me to save up so that I can hit the road again come MArch-April... welcome to the life of the modern-day nomad.
that said - I did think about the two homes for a while, but couldn´t quite wrap my brain around how that would work. so I ended up deciding to move to NY next summer. I think I can weather two winters (possibly travelling during the worst of the season, if work allows) before needing to leave again. Having flexible/freelance jobs helps with this lifestyle!

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Thu, September 16, 2004 - 10:01 AMi"m about to fly back to Keene NH via Jet Blue and NYC/Bus to keene to work for two weeks. I'm doing it by staying with friends rent free there and biking to work, and I've not yet found a place in SF where i'm staying with friends, so I'll come out ahead financially. Otherwise my hourly would have to go up. The fall colors should be great too -

Thu, September 23, 2004 - 7:30 AMSo far it's great. Breezy and cool, but sunny and warm mid-day. the trees are lightening up before they shed. I'll be heading out end of oct. before the charm of the place hibernates for a few months of ice.

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Sun, October 3, 2004 - 8:27 AMWow, I just made a very surprise trip from keene nh to LA to watch the Xprize launch monday morning (www.xprize.com). After they announced the 2nd Xprize date on a couple days ago, I called friends and things worked out yesterday to get cheap JetBlue tickets from NYC. I'm with friends, but everybody's got to work, so I'm renting a car and going out at about 4am. -

Fri, October 8, 2004 - 5:17 PM"Wow, i'm getting very confused"
I went to SF last monday, then came back to NY, up to Boston then back to NY then out to Vegas now back to NY.
I have been so all over the place, I lost my car at the economy lot because I couldn't remember where it was!!
Totally relate to the confused part.

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Wed, October 6, 2004 - 10:04 AMYeah, I'm doing the bicoastal thing right now. My home base is in San Francisco, but I'm doing a year-long degree at NYU. Meanwhile, my gf is in SF, so I'm jumping planes every few weeks. -

Thu, October 7, 2004 - 12:12 PMI'm in SF now, but I'm on the waiting list for an apt in Hell's Kitchen. When that comes in I will be back and forth all the time! as for now I'm in NYC about once every 6months.
I will be there in Nov. and I'm hoping it won't be too cold yet! -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Fri, October 8, 2004 - 7:54 PMwendee (and anyone else who wants to chime in): how do you work out the bicoastal living in terms of jobs, rent payments (utilities, too--how do you take care of one place while you're in the other?), pets (if any), and paying taxes? i'll ask my accountant about that next time i talk to him. if i'm living in NY but working for California companies, who gets the $?
ugh. the dream certainly calls.
oh, and if you're on both coasts, then is it always living out of a suitcase and getting takeout, or are both homes outfitted/equipped? -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Thu, June 2, 2005 - 7:24 PMI moved from SF to NYC in March, but I think I am going back when my contract job ends in August. I miss CA more than I thought I would, and compared to Manhattan, SF is cheaper! I can afford to live w/o a roommate in SF but not out here. I miss all the summer music festivals I frequent, and I miss my cats and my stuff which is still in storage back West.
My plan now is to move back to SF, and try to do an apt swap several times a year with ppl in NYC and Boston, for 1-2 weeks at a time or so. I have tix to U2, so I HAVE to come back to NYC in October. Plus, I need my real pizza and Century 21 fix a couple times a year. -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Fri, November 5, 2004 - 2:09 PMI've arrived in San Francisco and been reunited with my stuff and my car. I was holding off a cold from a particularly chilly night in New Hampshire and it got me after the flight, late nights in NYC and here for the election. I've been watching the sunshine and rain as I recover. It's great to be back, so beautiful and full of people and things happening, but I dread the work/apt search. Trying to avoid the job boards and stick with friends. All in all, things are good on this coast and I feel insulated a little from the effects of the election somehow. -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Tue, November 9, 2004 - 1:05 PMI am a New Yorker who moved to SF last year and I have fallen in love with a man out here but I can't work out here. I am tring to split my time between nyc and sf. The key is get good freinds, hussle--learn how to bartend and cater--and have a great network on either end.
Has anyone ever maintained a NY SF relationship? -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Thu, June 2, 2005 - 6:23 PMhey, don't know if you still are, but I've been in a NY-SF relationship for basically a year...

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Tue, November 9, 2004 - 1:05 PMHey there, I was also going to say. its a hard decision to stick to one town. SF has what NYC doesn't and vice versa.
I feel you!

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Fri, November 26, 2004 - 1:03 PMI'm in NYC (queens, preceded by Brooklyn). Thinking about SF, but it seems so isolated...NY has everything...seems like SF might be hard to adjust to.
But NYC can be hard...especially the winters (snow is ok but it gets really really cold...and no green vegetation for months...gets really depressing!)
The palm trees are a definite plus in CA...even the north of california has some...
The subway in NY is great, and you don't need a car. A real toss up. SF seems very small compared to NYC, but it's a cool city. -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Thu, December 23, 2004 - 5:37 PMI always like when I fly into NYC to visit.
Boston is nice to take the train around. And the people on the street are nice.
SF always something going on if not always that publicly accessible, especially to get to San Jose. You may get annoyed by a bum.
No leases, car, or pets helps.

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Fri, June 10, 2005 - 7:03 AMOk maybe I missed something along the way here, but the question was never answered. I too would love to flit back and forth between NJ and SF. But one, I don't have a job that would allow it and two hubby really doesn't beleive it would work for us.(He's a musician who has played at the Jersey shore for more then thirty years.) Reading through the posts I didn't hear any specifics.........
My family is out in San Francisco, and his is here in NJ. -

Tue, August 30, 2005 - 1:38 AMI'm leaving San Francisco right when the weather starts to get good good :)
I'm back in the Boston area for 3 months and then to San Francisco again. I don't think I'll ever really leave San Francisco but my family is back east.
Someday we might be able to virtually be in both places with holographic projection screens setup in the locations we like. One could see and hear, but touch, and smell (unless one bottled scents from the area) would be absent. A ghost of New England or San Francisco... -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Sun, September 18, 2005 - 1:36 AMI'm Portland/NYC. I've just jumped into the real challenge of having a home at either end. So far so good. I rent a room in a place w/ roommates so while I'm gone I know it's being taken care of. Flexibility w/ work is KEY. ALthough there's way more work to be had in NY. What I'm imagining is that I can work tons in NY, save a little, and that money goes so much further in Portland so it will give a little cushion for the lack of work in the more laid back city.
Now the taxes question is still a mystery! -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Thu, October 13, 2005 - 11:03 PMmy bf and i own houses in the bay area and have an apt in boston (he teaches at MIT, i have a job that i can do anywhere). our belief is that we only have to pay income taxes in the state where we report our residence... in our case california. i rent out my house most of the time when we're in boston, and my dog and child travel with me (the apt is dog friendly). right now my daughter's school is in berkeley and she brings her schoolwork for a week with her when we're on the east coast, but she may transfer to a cambridge school in the spring since we are thinking of spending more of that semester here.
i love having multiple homes, always having somewhere else to go, and i thrive on the constant change. i love the bay area weather, and i love the snowy winters. it definitely helps to have a partner that agrees on that issue and has the means to support that lifestyle as well.

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Wed, December 28, 2005 - 9:43 PMI grew up in RI, and my family will always be there.
I moved to Burbank almost 3 years ago, and I love most of the things about being here.
I have a place to stay in RI, it's cheaper to live, but there's far less opportunity, and the pay is substantially less.
In LA, work is extremely plentiful, and my goals and dreams appear to be more attainable here.
BUT....
I miss my Daughter, and I travel back and forth like a ping pong ball, but I never really satisfy my need to be a bigger part of her life while i'm trying to carve out a niche for myself in LA.
Filming in New England, specifically in RI, is getting more popular. It seems that when i'm trying my hardest to stay in LA, they're filming in RI. Every time the thought crosses my mind to move back, someone tells me:
Don't quit 5 minutes before the miracle happens, hang in there.
Although the volume of work as compared to back east is expontially greater, every person with stars in his/ her eyes finds their way out here every pilot season and relatively decreases the ratio.
It's sure not easy. -

Re: Who is living bicoastally?
Mon, January 2, 2006 - 9:42 PMHousing: For years I stayed with a friend in Berkeley and lived in an intentional community on Staten Island.
Work: I worked in DC for 3 to 5 months. I used that money to take classes in SF. I didn't pay rent cuz of my generous friend. I work traded in the community in ny.
Taxes: taxes ??
I always only had about a backpack and a duffle's worth of stuff that I went with me. All my wordly possessions.
Now that I have more stuff, the chapters are longer and I usually find a group house to live in when in the bay and live in community in ny. Once I had a room in a big beautiful house for $400 in Park Slope.
Now I'm about to move back to ny for good. I'll be going through the community again while I look for job and housing in brooklyn.
