I am soooo freakin sick

The hotel has this dry heat that sucks all the moisture out of the air. My head is pounding and feels like it's filled with sand. Question for you all, can a California doctor call in a prescription to a pharmacy in NY?

You'll have to ask your doctor. I wouldn't know.

I guess I should have warned you about winter and heaters on the east coast.

    Sorry!

I'm feeling much better as long as I don't turn the heat on. I alos asked the pharmacy about the drugs and yes, as CA doctor can call a pharmacy in NY and prescribe something as long as it's not a controlled substance.

Tricks that might help... sometimes it's good to crack a window. I bought two humidifiers and kept one going at all times... turning down the heat and staying warm with a blanket instead, and also there's a Nivea handcream that really helps with chapped skin.

        Good luck!

I guess I should also warn you that there's a strange phenomenon on the east coast of overcompensating the temperature outside. If it's freezing out, people turn up the heat to 85. If it's hot out, they turn down the air conditioning to 55.

In the winter, it's especially problematic, because when outside, a person has to wrap themselves in a wool coat, hat, scarf, gloves, etc. Then, walking into a bus, store, friend's apartment, etc. that is heated to 85, well... I've come near to passing out on more than one occasion. (I just couldn't get unwrapped fast enough!)

            Bob,
Put bowls of water on and around your heater.
Make sure you keep them full.
Thats what I did when I lived in NYC!
            feel better!

Yeah, I put tin cans full of water on all the radiators too.

I got a humidifier and have that running 24/7. I'm downing expectorant and advil cold/sinus and my doc phoned in an antibiotic for me. I'm feeling much better, not 100% yet but I'm headed in the right direction

Also, there are different pollens, etc. When I moved from San Francisco to New Jersey, I got so incredibly ill. Oh my God, I was in bed for like a month!!!

I only had allergies back east, not here in CA. Sometimes I forget that when I get nostalgic for "home." I also hardly ever get bad colds here but 5 days in a freezing-ass NJ house with my adorable runny-nosed nephew and I had a doozy over the holidays!

If you get those horribly dry east coast sinuses like me, add a touch of salt to your humidifier, it will do wonders!! Or a few drops of oregano oil. I always take Mullein for colds -- herbal and safe, Dr. Weil recommends it.

It's also good for all bi-coastal travellers to keep in mind that the bacteria and viruses on either coast are of different genetic lines, so if we develop antibodies for one coast, the ones on the opposite coast may well have free-reign of your immune system until you get acclimated.

Zinc lozenges work for the cold symptoms, about an hour or two at a time- won't make them go away, but you won't feel like you got hit by the train every time you open your eyes, either.

                      Good luck. Stay healthy,

                      T

You shoule also know about summer and air conditioners in hotels on the east coast. These can make your nights uncomfortable. Unless you stay somewhere pretty nice you'll typically have stale, humid air to deal with, or a roaring air conditioner that, if it lets you sleep, wakes you up at 4 am with meat-locker-like temperatures.
