Moving to San Francisco from NYC this summer..I have no clue how to move..help!!!!

Right now I am reading "Newcomer's HANDBOOK". Anyone recommend a company
who will move and store stuff for us? We don't have lots of stuff. Also for people who are
moving from SF to NYC, can I ask you why? I am totally freaked out 'cause I am a NYC girl..
east coast girl..but my hubby wants to move to SF. So I said why not? But what if I hate it?
I do go there once a year because my family moved to CA, but living is different than visiting.
Any advice, comments appreciated. Thanx bunch!

the Middle East Cafe in Cambridge, MA. I used to hang out there from the mid-80's to mid-90's.

Any body else here from Boston/Cambridge who moved West? I moved to SF in '94. I haven't missed Boston for years, but just saw this video which brought back memories of the Middle East Cafe:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KVKo-vqaeuo

Is there a tribe for former Bostonians/Massachusetts folks who live in SF or CA?

Thanks.

I am originally from CA, but now live (and will probably end up staying in MA). This sucks but I am trying to convince myself for my girlfriend's sake that Boston isn't really all that bad. Can anyone relate? PS: A shameless plug, come and tell me some stories about your voyages across the U.S. (i know you have some). My tribe is called CoasttoCoast.

Has anyone here used Door-to-door for moving/storage? I'm wondering what the service is like, if it's expensive, etc etc.. I may be moving from SF to NY and this seems like a decent option if i can afford it, especially since they can store my shtuff while i find a place to live.

Corrollary question is whether or not it's legal to set one of these crates up on the sidewalk/street..
I'm looking to network with folks, to extend an invitation to visit Bald Mountain Retreat (www.baldmountainretreat.com) as my guest. Like-minded people who appreciate rustic accommodations are welcome to come up at no charge. (Those who require a private room can inquire about those accommodations as well.)
Basically, I'm offering people the opportunity to come stay with a retired naturopathic doctor in a truly amazing natural setting, secluded, idyllic, peaceful...
Also, if you might like to lead a retreat, please contact me.
Thank you and you are welcome,

Orlando, FL to Portland, OR - am I insane???

I feel like I've been stuck down here in the swamp for longer than I care to say and dreaming of the day I get to escape. I thought it would be back to my home state of NC, but as it happens, I fell in love with a community in Portland. I'm a southern girl, I say y'all a lot, was raised in a rural-ish part of NC, and really can't stand Orlando/Hellando (where I work) and deLand/Duh-Land, (where I live.) Now it looks like i'm gonna make a huge move about as far away in the continental US as I could go. Some days I think I'm insane for wanting to do this.

I think we're gonna use PODS to move our stuff - we already got 1 delivered, but I think we'll need 2. Question is: how do I get my critter kids there? I have 3 big old dogs, 1 puppy, and 3 cats. Thinking of buying a horse trailer for the dogs, having the cats in our truck and doing the great American road trip with some friends or trying to find a pet mover service I can trust, and I don't trust just anyone. My dogs have some special issues and 2 are on some light meds. Anyone know of a pet mover service that will let the humans tag along? Any info is appreciated, as well as reassurances that this is doable!

Bright blessings,
B

another bicoastal move: need advice, please

Okay, so after another small-year stint on the east coast, i'm going back to the west coast. Things have changed, people have moved, etc., so i have to do this differently.

Here's the skinny: The last time, i packed my stuff up, shipped the majorly big stuff to my parents in l.a. (i was moving to SF), rented a big SUV and stuffed it with as much of the rest of my stuff, and drove to my parents'.

This time, things are different:

1) my parents have temporarily relocated to arizona
2) i have a car now (four-door toyota corolla)

These are my two major concerns. Overburdening your parents (hehe) is one thing; your friends is another. I'm moving again to SF, this time i think for a really long time. All my friends in SF are in shared living situations. I don't want to ask them to necessarily be the recipient of my stuff if i have to ship some of it.

Okay, my car. I was talking with another friend about possibly reducing my stuff to the point that i can be "self-contained," i.e., stuff things in the back seat, the trunk, and rent one of those shell-type contraptions to hold the lighter stuff (e.g., clothes) on the roof. Well, after assessing my possessions, i don't know if that's quite possible. I probably have just a little too much to totally be self-contained, yet i def don't have enough to rent one of those u-haul trucks.

I have been thinking of two things: 1) small movers or 2) renting a trailer for my car (which doesn't have a hitch). I have never driven a car with a trailer attached to it, btw

Any thoughts? Advice? I would love any suggestions, etc. Thanx!

Anyone been in a similar situation?

revolutionary school buses available (no republicans need apply)

I'm a travellin' fool, mostly to the third world. Lotsa time in Central America, the Caribbean, and SE Asia.
I also travel by my buses, I have 27 or them, so if you need a bus, parts, or just advice, just yell

I'm still new to this tribe thing, but I am a nice person, and have the best buses in the world. I use school buses to haul medical and material aid to some of poorest places in the world (Haiti, Chiapas Mexico, El Salvador, and Nicaragua) and buy and sell them, and bus parts to support the project. I take every penny i make and convert it directly back into school supplies, medical supplies, tools, generators, and whatever the folks ask for specifically, (no junk, no used clothing) and then drive it down in person (except Haiti, that's $6000 thru the Panama Canal. Ouch)

I sell buses to folks that are 100% functioning in every way when they leave my hands, and also give any body thirty days to return the bus if unsatisfied. Nobody ever has, but it's OK, I'll just sell it to somebody else. you will also get a lifetime of free advice before and after you get a bus from me, I'm avaiable 7 days a week within reason, and after having dismantled 14 buses, and owning about 60,I am pretty knowledgable about their inner workings. Also got lots of good used bus parts, at the best price anywhere in the US. Ii have no overhead, just my Mazda mini truck and some tools.

Cali~Gal Looking for a Summer Sublet in NY!

Hi there,
Artist/writer/alternative healer & world travelling chick- currently residing back in the old hometown of L.A. is looking for a cool, clean, somewhat pleasant/decent and CHEAP summer sublet in NY.
Would ideally like to find something for two to three months, as close to the $4-500 range (though cheaper would be even better!) as I'm going to probably keep my place here too in the meantime...
What you may not be able to find or learn through my profile here on Tribe, I can fill in here: I'm CLEAN! (looking thus also for a clean place/space or roommates if this would be a share situation...) I'm open/friendly, responsible, courteous and conscientious, respectful and relatively quiet. (Also partial to the same qualities again, if the situation would be shared.)
Any decent if not great, clean/pleasant/harmonious place that I can call home for the summer months while in NY would be fantastic!
Look forward to hearing from you!!!!
And thanks for your help~
S.

So I have an opportunity to be in oregon this summer, probably be out there for 3-4 months, and will be working in several different places, plus wanting to play and galavant on the weekends and head out the the coast and all that loveliness....thing about it is that would all sort of be much more convenient if I had a car.
If I don't have a permanent oregon address how could I buy something that would get me around and have it legally registered? My driver's license is New York now, and switching for 4 months doesn't make sense...
is there some bicoastal car leasing something? Can't rent a car for that much use or time....
what do people do? Greyhound makes me miserable.
thanks

I grew up in New York and live and work in San Francisco. I'm going to NY to do a staged reading of a new play next week and to network and explore.

I'd love to know if there are any theater artists in this lil' forum who work in New York and CA.

Did you need (or want) to make NY your permanent home for a while in order to establish the necessary connections?

Do you have representation in both markets?

How have you cultivated collaborative relationships in both places?

Who is living bicoastally?

Like my made-up word? ;]

I've always loved NY but have identified as a California/SF gal. That is starting to change rapidly, and I think I want to be in NY, but am scared off by rents and winter. With $ not an object (which it is) I'd like to have residences in both places and truly be bicoastal.

So I'm curious to hear from people who have done this or who do this: Is it all it's cracked up to be in my mind? What are the practical considerations of things like paying taxes--do you have to pay in two states?--and having pets? Do you or have you successfully done a swap? Or had a nightmare swap?

Have any of you struggled with the SF vs. NY choice, and what have you decided?

I would love to hear people's stories and insights on this.

I'm looking for info. from people on memorable stops while driving across country, say NYC to SF or vice versa (or anywhere generally near these points). Not looking for the month-long take a detour kind of drive, but what memorable stops you might have had along the way while trying to get from point A to B reasonably quick. This is for something I'm writing, so even horror stories or tales of divy truck-stop towns are welcome. Did you take route 80, route 50? What did you see, what kind of places did you stay in? Feel free to post here or message me personally -- thanks!

I remember someone in this tribe advising that in our bi-coastal mindsets, the best we can do is to choose to move only for rational reasons. Otherwise, we'll remain torn and will only gain the expense of a huge moving bill.

Do you find this true? Has anyone moved for an *irrational* reason, like a whim, and had it work out?

I'm so happy to see this community I started still rockin' after my being gone for almost a year.

You see I got waylayed not on a coast! By a woman and producing my first documentary film. It felt right to drop out of this group being in Santa Fe, NM. Beautiful place, no coastline though.

Of course now I'm back in Keene, NH at Antioch Univ. to make some money back in my career in ed. tech. Shocking to be back in a stable small white town after Santa Fe's new age storm of art, searchers, money, and beautiful sights and air with great weather. Plus my mom's side of the family is there.

Maintaining multiple residences is EXPENSIVE esp. in Bay Area

During the last 29 years I have lived in each Miami[3], Buffalo[7], Rochester[2], SF Bay Area[15], SE Ohio&Bay Area[2] with month long visits to Manhattan, LA, Florida Gulf Coast.

A few years ago I lost more than $650,000 in cash and real estate while frequenting the California Family Court System. My attorneys neglected to foreworn me about the If-you-have-a-penis-you're-screwed clause in family law. I you don't understand......... just be thankful.

I thought relocating to Ohio for warmer months and limiting time in California to 5-6months a year would be exciting and less expensive. I could reacquaint with old friends and spend more time with family. Turns out the old friends are boring and family can add additional demands on both time and emotion. 2 Rents/mortgages, insurances, auto expenses, totaled more than I had planned.

But I have learned a few things.

I most recently have been living aboard a beautiful 42' yacht owned by friends, a married couple. They purchased this $500,000[new] boat when it was about 12 yrs old for $98,000. The boat sat unused in the water for 6-7 years before they bought it. Then invested $16,000 in refurbishment/upgrades. The original owners purchased the boat for their retirement. Soon after they retired they developed health issues that prohibited them to spend time on the water. For more than 6 years they continued to rent a space to store it, annual fees and maintenance. The boat depreciated in value, with very little additional wear from usage.

The yacht is far more appealing than a condo and has double the floor space, triple the storage. The views on all sides can be changed within minutes with less effort than driving your car to the nearest grocery. And with far less investment than real estate. Houseboats big enough for 1-2 people to live on can be purchased for as little as $20,000 used. Covered berths start at less than $300 month, many with laundry facilities, gyms, meeting space, etc just like apts. Phone, cable, high speed internet is available at most marinas, as well. You never lack for 'friends' that would love to visit...for a few hours or weekends. You can easily become unavailable to unwelcomed visitors via secuity gates leading to the berth and by cruising down the waterway a short distance.

For $100k you can find yachts with 2 staterooms/bedrooms, 2 heads/baths, complete kitchen facilities. For as little as $20k you can find houseboats with decks, kitchens, full baths, and sleep quarters. Just like house trailers ammenities may include central air/heat, some even have hottubs.

A couple of old saying to remember..."The 2 happiest days in a boat owners life are the day he buys it and the day he sells it."

Often they are just happy to be rid of it!

"Boat: wooden hole in the water in which to throw large sums of money".

Boats are traditionally purchased as recreational vehicles that require maintenance and storing fees. After the novelty wears off boat owners see them as expenses not investments and are more interested in reducing monthly expenses than they are in getting best market value like they would when selling their car. The quicker they sell the sooner they realize a savings.

My decision to make my California residence a boat and my Ohio residence traditional with mortgage and lawn give me the best of both environments. California living is best enjoyed surrounded by nature. Water is very calming. Boat traffic is far less stressful than freeways.

I have rambled enough. I am sold on the idea of living on the water in California.

west coast expats in NYC?

OK, so I am beginning to accept that for at least the next period of my life I am a New Yorker. Moved back here a year ago, grew up here, but then spent 4 years becoming a west coast girl before circumstance brought me back.
So now I am here, and committed to at least the next 2 years. And I am losing my west coast-ness!
How can I maintain my kick-back mellowness yet live as a new yorker too? Any other east coasters with a west coast heart finding a balance? I don't want to lose that hint of hippie that feels so right, but doesn't work well with the city.

hey all.

just moved back to nyc. although I consider this place home... a few years in cali definitely changed my perspective. I'm happy to be back... yet there's a bit of loneliness as i experience a serious lack of young, consious people (granted... i'm currently working in midtown... that might have something to do with it). anyway... if you're a young concious person living in nyc.... how bout writing something inspirational? Just to prove that you are out there.

thanks.

he's a musician and bitches endlessly every time I want to move....(whiny boyfriend voice)"I have to move all the bass guitars, and the amp, and the recording equipment, and the special-special microphone, and my ginormous compueter..."

so basically I have to get rich so that he can have all the equipment he needs on both coasts and I don't have to hear about it whenever I get a yen for a change of ocean. any ideas? prostitution has already been ruled out.

Hey there,

I'm in Baltimore, MD and I'm coming back to LA in just a few weeks.

I'm having a fit trying to secure an apartment from here...ya know, so I don't have to blow money on hotels while I'm looking. I have references, money for security deposit and 1st month. I also have crappy credit on paper but my boyfriend (who is moving with me) has SPOTLESS credit.

Does anyone have any advice or know of any websites/agency that specialize in cross country moves? Last time I transplanted I moved in with friends
So I've never had to do this before!
Any advice would be stellar.
Thanks

It was particularly hellishly-busy-stressful in brooklyn this summer. So I jsut said fuck it I deserve a ticket! Now I can finally take a breath and know that (though for only a short visit) california will welcome me with open arms and a peaceful mind. The pacific at my fingertips!! *sigh*

People who never make up their mind--SF or NY? LA or DC? Berkeley or Boston or Bellevue or Baltimore? Half way (Lawrence KS) is nowhere. People who go on a trip with everything they own and stay a few years. Charlottesville or Chico? It's hot there. It's hot here. Summer in Eugene, Winter in Savannah. Green grass everywhere: but roots are tricky. The longest Ive stayed on either side is 5 years, and that required deep therapy. On the right now, headed left by next spring, hopefully for good. Nice to know my disease is not singular. I don't fly much anymore either. I like to drive between, and have located best campgrounds, laundromats, bookstores, flea markets and breakfast bars all along the blue & red highways. Pooh on people who never move away. Why would you stay in one state for so long?

Di5orient 2005: Going Mobile w/ Free Fuel on Weekends

Disorient's bringing a new beast to BRC this year: the DI5ORIENT EXPRESS (DEX) - a massive art car slash mobile sound system, made with love in NYC and dragged to the playa by a crackerjack team of machine elves.

Each night, we'll park and play next to a different piece of spectacular Playa art, bringing our music, light, and fire next to stone, earth and steel.

Di5orient loves performers grooving to our music: fire performers, poi spinners, hoopers, dancers, jugglers, etc. We'll welcome you anytime.

On Friday and Saturday, the DEX will be providing fire performers with free white gas and lamp oil (while it lasts).

If listed, nightly locations are tentative. Updates will be posted at our base camp: 8:00 and Esplanade.

Or just look for the blinking, orange "Di5" sign on the big bus with no sides and all the speakers on top and the 18' LED semicircles making those cool patterns...(well, you'll know it once you see it!)

Here's the lineup:

MON - Warm-up in camp, with house, breaks, & chill-out from camp DJs.
*Di5orient, 8:00 and Esplanade

TUES - Gloriously techy stuff: Spinoza (electro/tech-house), Artur (funky techno), Wolf + Lamb (minimal tech-house), The Eye (minimal techno & Goa trance).
*Party starts at the greeters station and then moves to open playa

WEDS - House, and lots of it: Laird (breaky house), Bass (tribal house), Vitamin Devo vs Biancadina (progressive house), Arrow Chrome (tribal house). Artur (deep house), Sascha (chillout).
*Location TBA

THURS - Space Cowboys ahoy!! Cap'n Kirk brings a crew to rock our beast with breakbeats (plus D&B by Arrow Chrome). Then we head to Fringe to see Hamsa Lila bringing in the dawn.
*At "the big tree"; Pilgrimage to The Fringe, Amnesia and 3:00

FRI - Freek Factory presents: Lorin Bassnectar, All Good Funk Alliance, Rodman, Rhythmystic, Mikio, and Ooah -- all kinds of breaks, all night and all morning long, with a Freekily massive boost to the bass!
*Deep playa, directly behind The Man (12:00)

SAT - Dawn set by Yossi Fine (world/dub). Post-burn lineup tbd. We host the party all night and all morning long. Party ends SUN at noon.
*We bring the DEX right next to the smoking embers of The Man

We'll see you all out there, blinking in the distance with love!!!!!

Last week I pulled up my roots in San Francisco (which I had finally started calling "home") and moved to NYC. I'm doing a combined art/technology grad program at NYU. I've only ever been to New York once before.

Some random thoughts from my fresh off the plane self:
- it's loud (but inside my sublet is quiet, even in the LES)
- people wearing shorts and t-shirts.... at night!
- when I got dominican food at 1am and I asked for plantains, they asked if I wanted sweet or regular
- finding a decent place to live is hard (please see my listing looking for a place!)

Just got word this afternoon to give notice at my corporate apartment that I'll be moving out on July 29th. That means on 7/29 I get to go home to San Francisco to stay for a while

Of course I'll be out of a job, but I'll have a minimum of 6 months paid with benefits to find a new job or new assignment at the bank. Regardless I get to be homeI al and I always seem to land on my feet one way or another.

Final tally of frequent flyer miles - I have to run the numbers, but it looks like my final take will be 6 round trips to the Caribbean.

I'm not a fast food fan, but those kids can really cook it. sigh. Why haven't they made it to the east? I suppose we're just not as nice out here.... :)

A theory on the divide....

I'm from New York and I've been living in L.A. for 2 years. Its no secret that native Californians have a lot of shit to talk about New Yorkers and the same certainly applies the other way around. You know the stereotypes- "people in Cali are all fake, people in New York are all rude" and so on and so on. I've been thinking about this and the differences between both coasts, how they parallell the state of the world today, and I've thought of some analogies I'd love to share with all of you fellow bi-coastal-ers-

<I just reread this and it sounds a bit sexist so if you must boys- fire away, I can take it>

It started with the thought, which I'm sure isn't all that original, that these stereotypes are a perfect analogy of the STEREOTYPICAL woman representing the west coast, and the STEREOTYPICAL man representing the east coast-

East Coast- Strong, powerful, competitive, controlling, grimy, industrial, challenging, less concern about homemaking (less time spent there), aggressive, large fallic man-made structures of steel that shoot into the horizon, and above all- people rely more on wit, intellect, "street smarts", than feeling and emotions and are closed to protect themselves.

West Coast- Open, space, laid back, relaxed, fresh, more concern with personal space and homemaking (more time spent there), passive, large trees and mountains that shoot into the horizon (MOTHER nature), and people rely more on feelings, kindness, and sensitivity than intellect, greed and power, and are open to sharing.

before I continue- remember these are based on the stereotypes and I love both coasts equally.

Then I started thinking about the imbalances in relationships, and more importantly, the fucked up state of the world today. When a man is aggressive and overpowering with a modern woman, it scares her and pushes her away. Then he gets angry because he wants to take what he wants, no offense boys, but if you are the stereotypical macho man- its usually sex. When a woman tries to talk about her feelings and emotions with an old fashioned macho man it usually scares him and pushes him away. Then the woman gets upset because she wants to share herself. So there's one possible, yet common nonetheless, imbalance. Then I was thinking about this country we live in- and the good old American dream, which is basically take as much as you can who cares who we hurt in the process- you know- we learned about this in high school. Its called "manifest destiny" This and- the government. And how our country is completely DIVIDED. You got red states and blue states. You want to know what I think? I think the red states are still trying to "manifest there destiny". They'll justify anything for personal gain. And I think most of you would agree its pretty damn wrong. One might even say evil because they act with no conscience. Only personal greed. And its not just in the government. Its in Hollywood- you dont need to have a good story to get a movie made, you dont need to have talent to be an actor, just- greed. Money power! The good old American way. Music- how much recylcled crap is on the radio? In my opinion- almost 100%. You dont need talent to be a successful musician. Just - you got it- greed- shit, they'll even let you lipsynch when you perform, as long as you remember those dance moves they taught you and you want the fame and fans badly enough. And it goes for EVERYTHING in this country. We are getting farther and farther away from the truth- real art, real feelings, real power. And we are comprimising our souls, our true happiness in the process because the greed- the money and the power are all thats important in this country. If you go to other parts of the world- they know how to live- eat- love be happy and enjoy life because they aren't controlled by greed and gluttony. You know why they think we're all obese and wherever we go we expect everyone to speak our language? Because it is a stereotype that represents the American way- greed and gluttony. And now we're getting into deep shit with this greed of ours. We've taken it beyond our borders. If we keep going we are going to destroy ourselves and everything that stands in our way- just as every greedy empire throughout history has done before us.

Now. Deep cleansing breathe. You know where, in my opinion, are the only places left in America that collectively are able to see beyond this old fashioned, impractical, stereotypical macho man perspective? These two beautiful coasts. The coasts is where the true artists and visionaries from around the world come to flourish and make their dreams come true. And it is the greed that ultimately makes these artists comprimise their talent, integrity, and soul in the end because its getting to the point where we have to to survive in this country. Mind you- I believe that we are all artists. Anything you do and create is art if your heart and soul are present in the "doing" and you are passionate about it. Damn- there's even an art to politics if it comes from a true place within someone's heart. I think the problem is that we live how we've been taught to live in this country- selfishly and in fear. The government is always trying to instill fear into the public. Thats how people- even animals are controlled- through fear. Thats why we have to comprimise our dreams because we're not helping eachother because we're scared if we help someone else they'll get more than us or finish first. We're too busy competing because that's the American way. And thing about judgment is that it comes from fear- of what we dont know, aren't familiar with and isn't comfortable.

Knowledge is gained through experience. I believe there is a saying about never judging another indian until you've walked in his moccassins. Its true. People say America has no true culture but it does- on the East and West Coasts, but they are remarkably different. If the world could take an example of the way people live in New York live together, with different cultures, different religions, but proud of their roots, co-existing in peace together there would be alot less bloodshed in theworld today. And if the whole world could be a little more at peace with the earth and take a little more time with ourselves the way the West Coast is, we wouldn't be destroying the earth and our bodies at such a rapid pace. The more I hear people from both coasts hating on the other and judging and competing (its usually the people who have never gone to the other side) it makes me so sad. Because I believe we are the only hope left. And we are most definately running out of time. The shit will hit the fan and we shouldn't have to run away. We have so much to learn from eachother if we could just put our silly judgements aside and unite we would be a more powerful nation- but in the good way. We need balance. We are SO far from it.

A friend recently told me that we are entering the age of aquarius, which, he expalined, means the age of the woman because we have been living for so long in the age of man. So I guess there's some hope. But we definately need to support eachother, learn from eachother, and without sounding (as my NY friends would say) hippie-dippie love eachother.

If you've actually read this entire post. Thank you. You are the hope.

I have such bi-coastal disorder!

I am in need of some feedback about Providence, RI. I am an eastcoast transplant ( jersey, boston, MV, salem, and so on) living in SF for the past 10 years, and I am looking for move back to "the other coast". Missing it! I just don't know where yet, and need a new liberal, diverse, progressive, open scene, as I have been spoiled in SF. I hear good things, so what's the deal? Thanks for any feedback! Or any other reccomendations for where to land safely...

when i'm in school on the east coast, my mind almost automatically converts the time 3 hours ahead. then when i come back on the west coast, every time i see a post w/ a certain time, i forget that the time is the actual time. then i get bummed b/c i realize threads that i'd assumed were just posted were actually written at least 3 hours prior. :p

My peculiar bi-coastal disorder involves San Francisco and Ft. Lauderdale. I spend about 2 weeks each month in each place and it doesn't involve work. Just has to be, for the time being. And my suitcase always seems to be full of sand.

Anyone else here bouncing between California and Florida? I find the dichotomy jarring... in SF I have no car, walk most everywhere, and chill out by sitting on hills looking at the ocean or bay. Florida is flat as a pancake, no car=no life, and it's humid as all get-out.

I keep praying one of the airlines will wake up and offer SFO-FLL or OAK-FLL service... don't they notice that there's massive traffic between the two, and SFO-MIA flights are packed to the wings? (Just as United dropped out of the market and left it all to American) Are you listening, jetBlue?

Don't get me started on the differences between the people in NoCal and SoFla; sometimes I feel like I'm living between two planets, not two states.

Also, any South Floridians in Northern California or vice versa?

NY/SF apartment swapping

i am SF based and NY infatuated. okay, i LOVE new york and i hate winter. and i love hot nasty sticky humid heat.

i am looking into expanding my business. am interested in both short- and long-term swapping possibilities--spring through fall. i live with one person who is also interested in potentially swapping too. we might swap at the same time depending on our schedules.

manhattan or brooklyn.

i am looking to begin dialogue now with people who have similar interests. responsible, no drugs, blah blah blah...of course! we're sleeping in each other's beds, using each other's phones/computers/whatever...be cool! so ideally i'm looking to do this through FOAF networking.

write me to begin this dialogue. i'm thinking five days--vacation kinda thing is easy. but two weeks/two months needs more negotiating.

please spread the word to your friends too!

So, I'm switching coasts again this year... parents are not doing so good health-wise. Joy is me.

At least I'm not moving to that seething quagmire in SoCal; it's SF for me. I will miss New England dearly... and that includes the weather. Won't miss paying for heating oil. NYC, not so much... lots of friends there though.

I'm looking forward to being SF; it's a good place as large California cities go. I'm going to dye my hair green when I get there to celebrate.

June timeframe.

I need to find a job there now. Meh.

i'm seriously in love with both california (sf) and new york city!

i spent 10 days in ny, flew back for a week to ca (where i'm at today), and am going to fly back out on thursday for 5 days. it's for interviews. i'm thinking i'm going to move out to ny this fall.

i have a hard time adjusting/transitioning to the difference in pace. in ny it's go go go! and here in california i've just completely crashed and can barely motivate myself to do anything.

if bicoastal disorder is like bipolar disorder, then new york is definitely the manic phase. but california isn't really the depressive phase, but in relation to ny in terms of activity levels for me i guess it fits.

starting 1/6 I'll be commuting to NYC from San Francisco weekly till mid August. Any tips for maintaining my sanity? I can fly home every weekend if I want or fly someone out to see me on the companys dime. Anyone in a similar situation? Do you fly home every weekend?
I'll have corporate housing on the east coast so I can always stay there if I want.

So who all is swapping coasts for the holidays this year? I'm flying from SF into BWI... friend from high school is driving me to PA... couple days there with the 'rents.. then to my brother's in NJ to play with my nephews for several days.. then to NYC for a quickie visit, then back down to Philly to fly back. That's 4 states in 1.5 weeks (I told my friend in Boston I draw the line at NY, he'll have to meet me there!!).

I haven't made any trips east this year so that's why all the flurry.

By the way, anyone here from Brooklyn? I'm thinking of taking a peek while in New York... I think it was Caleb actually who told me it was cool, I don't think I've ever seen it while in NYC...

It's raining right now. I think I might go to central park. I'll be gone before the last of the leaves fall.

Back, by popular demand...

Wanna meet this Thursday night in Hayes Valley at 6:30pm? A friend recommended a place called Jade Bar... happy hour is until 7:30 with cheap drinks, and they supposedly have really nice "small plates" for eats. I haven't been there myself... it is a 3-story place so you may have to search around for the easterners.. (expatriates, was it?), but that said, it isn't huge. It does gets crowded fast. If you're new, let me know if we should expect you, and we'll keep an eye out for anyone looking lost.

Hey y'all... I don't know how many of you are in San Francisco, seems there were several here. I've met some former east coasters from an SFNewcomers list (non-Tribe)... scary how close our home towns are actually! Getting people together seems to be my thing lately... so if anyone wants to join us next Wed. Nov. 3 at Magnolia pub in the upper Haight for happy hour and to talk coasts, you're welcome! 6:30 pm

The great bi-coastal stuff shuffle...

Yeah, hello. First time poster, long time bi-coastaly challenged individual. Been reading y'alls posts for a while now. Damn, damn glad to know I'm not alone in this.
Quick history by way of intro...I am from Washington the state, have tripped most of this countries roads, and fell stupid in love with NY the city and the Hudson River valley about 5 years ago.
Since then I have spent half my time out here, working on a sailboat on the Hudson, and the other half in the woods of the Olympic Peninsula of WA. The boat seasons are four months long and I vary wich ones I work.
I have gone back and forth ten times now(planes, trains, automobiles) not counting a few random fights one direction or the other for special events etc. (god bless jet blue).
In March of this year I finally took the plunge, and officially "moved" to an apartment in Harlem, and then in July, started another boat season. Nearly done with that now, and guess what? Yup. Planning to move back to the left coast.
Aaargh. But besides that.... I'm writing to ask what you all think is the best way to get the ridiculous amount of crap I carried, mailed, had my friends drag out here on vistits, and recently accuired, back to Seattle?
I'm thinking teleporter as first choice, but if we had that, we'd all be in a serious state of party. Tandem-coastal, no-longer disorder-baby, right?
Anywhoo, thanks fer listenin'...

Cali and other thoughts

The only people I ever heard refer to California as 'Cali' was when I moved to PA '80-'84. They'd say, oh you're from Cali? I thought that was the most ridiculous sounding nickname. Isn't there some rap song - goin' back to Cali? I think that's when it started. Or even worse was when they would refer to SF as 'frisco'.

Meanwhile there's a term I think only a west coast person uses. Growing up we'd always go "back east" to visit family. I'm guessing it comes from the history of the western migration. The idea being that we're all in someway originaly from the east coast, and that going "back" has a sense of going home.

Anyway, bisocastal stuff is on my mind. I'm going "back east" for my 20th high school reunion next month!

From novels, poems, songs, wherever...? Seems like plenty of lyrical people have been torn between East & West.

Here's one to get the ball rolling. It's from Underworld, by Don DeLillo:

"This happened back east of course. I've heard that term a lot since coming to this part of the country [California]. But I never think of the term as a marker of geography. It's a reference to time, a statement about time, about all the densities of being and experience, it's time disguised, it's light-up time, shifting smoky time tricked out as some locus of stable arrangement. When people use that term they're talking about the way things used to be before they moved out here...and about the way things still exist."

Here's one off the top of my head by Neil Diamond with lyrics. Can anyone else think of any?

Neil Diamond - I Am… I Said

L.A.'s fine, the sun shines most the time
And the feeling is 'lay back'
Palm trees grow, and rents are low
But you know I keep thinkin' about
Making my way back

Well I'm New York City born and raised
But nowadays, I'm lost between two shores
L.A.'s fine, but it ain't home
New York's home, but it ain't mine no more

I am, I said
To no one there
An no one heard at all
Not even the chair
I am, I cried
I am, said I
And I am lost, and I can't even say why
Leavin' me lonely still

Did you ever read about a frog who dreamed of bein' a king
And then became one
Well except for the names and a few other changes
If you talk about me, the story's the same one

But I got an emptiness deep inside
And I've tried, but it won't let me go
And I'm not a man who likes to swear
But I never cared for the sound of being alone

I am, I said
To no one there
An no one heard at all
Not even the chair
I am, I cried
I am, said I
And I am lost, and I can't even say why
Leavin' me lonely still

out-of-state license plates in CA

While I've never taken a formal survey, it seems to me that from my time here in LA, I've probably seen more New Jersey license plates here than any other state other than, of course, California itself. Being a former Jersey boy myself, this gives me a lot of happiness, as if New Jersey isn't that far awayl In fact, I like to think that New Jersey and Los Angeles have a few things in common:

1) a huge shoreline and beachfront property, with all the delightfully sleazy clientele it can attract (anyone ever been to wildwood? or pt. pleasant?)

2) a history in the film industry (at one point, thomas edison was exploring film and intended to create his own studio in menlo park, but his model - where people would watch films in private booths - only caught on in the form of peep shows. incidentally, there is, or was at least, a porn studio in nj, one of the few outside of the SF valley in the entire US)

3) a common enemy in manhattan.

what more could you want?

I've settled into the life out here, wether it's the calm country of massachusetts or the wild style of NYC, but man do I miss California. I go back every year to visit family, and soon my parents are moving back, and well, I'm torn... should I go with them?

Everytime I go, I never want to leave mmmmmm and jsut the thought of it makes me smile. The smell of eucalyptus, the Berkeley ampitheater, and Oooeee and that incredible somewhat ganja....

Hallo,

I'm not sure I suffer from bi-coastal disorder just yet, but I may be on my way. I just transplanted from Oregon to Connecticut for grad school, and I am horribly homesick for the West. Does it get better? Are there other folks out here biding their time 'til they can get back to the land of big mountains, evergreens, and good beer?

Anyone else feel sudden pangs of bicoastal when watching certain flicks? I watched "The Station Agent" the other night... takes place in New Jersey, near where an ex-boyfriend of mine lives. (I'm in San Francisco.) In the film, the guy Joe with the New Yorker accent who kinda of forcibly makes friends with the main character who wants to be left alone is just SO east coast... so into friendships, so hilarious! *SIGH*

Fear and Decisions

Well having made a firm decision to move from NH back to SF, two things have happened.
1. fear comes in waves. people offer jobs for a few more months to keep me here. I go with no job in SF. People offer apartments. I only have friends in SF with couches. I can hold my breath and make it to a lulls though. I have fear of losing interia in New England, which leads to great friends in old age, buying houses on the same street, jobs, etc. But wait, i'm not married and "place" is not what it used to be. I believe i can be bicoastal, i believe I can be bicoastal...as long as a have a primary base and a predictable pattern so as to reap the benies of stability. I think a base in Bay Area, with Burning Man and Sundance trips, and summer time in New England would work.

2. And Things start happening from decisions. Since being decisive, something rare for me, I've had a burning man camp take me in and old friends pop up, and there's a lot of folks in it that seem cool. Having decided to try and live around UCB in a shared house with trees around with graduate students and professionals, i'm finding a lot of them on craigslist. Being specific has it's rewards I guess.

I have several friends coming out this fall from Portland, OR to NYC and got tix for around $200. I know there are often good deals, but I thought I would share.

On Travelocity under Low Deals Alert.

(BTW, Can't we just get rid of that big chunk of land in the middle?)

Wanna drive from NYC to SF in early Aug???

So the deal is...

I've got the car.
I've got the space for YOU and some stuff.
We head out the 1st or 2nd week in August.
I'm looking for the partner in crime to join me in a mini roadtripping adventure.

About you...

You're fun, chill and can drive (well).
You won't want to smoke in my car.
You're willing to split driving and costs.

About me...

I'm super fun, a traveller, an artist, highly energized, love to talk, listen to music and make mischief.

And for those along the route... want to put up two people for a night?!?!?!?!?

hey there I'm the new confused coaster. raised on cape cod, did time in sarasota, a master's degree in SF, homless in Pacific Beach, did a stint in TJ, shoeless in baja. I now find myself frazzled in brooklyn with so much to miss about everywhere that no here is there and it's so unclear as what to do next!

I've found the best cure for the here, there, everywhere whoorlieness is a nice cold one (or a few for that matter) at the Roller Coaster Saloon in PB. Old wooden coaster, bar seats made of old coaster seats, trading beer coasters for free drinks, and a shit load of people from some other place looking for the same thing you are.

peace out coasters!
genetically inherited bi-coastal disorder

Greetings,
I am new to this tribe and would just like to say for the record that I can blame my parents for this condition. My father was from Mill Valley, my mother from Boston. They met at Antioch college and concieve me on a motercycle trip in England.(Whoa OK to-much-information-girl) But alas this is why I find myself living in SF during the school year and returning to Boston for the summer. I own motercylces on both coasts. I'm deeply in love with my shag partners on the east coast and deeply in lust with the ones on the west. I think perhaps I'll just declare myself a migratory animal and resign myself to this dualism. Anyway I'm sure you all understand....
peace
JD

I'm moving back east (to NYC) this summer. I'm somewhere between extremely excited and somewhat sad... is there any cure for bi-coastal disorder other than switching coasts every 3-5 years?

curiously yours,
